William C. “Bill” Meyer, Jr., age 85, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in Odebolt.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes, with burial to follow in Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View, Iowa. Military honors will be conducted by Eilert-Auen Post No. 133 of the American Legion. The Reverend Kevin Freese will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services.
Born May 6, 1927, in Irwin, Iowa, William Carl Meyer, Jr. was the son of William and Jessie (Buthman) Meyer. He graduated from Irwin High School.
On September 7, 1950, Bill was united in marriage to Mary Ann Claussen. They were blessed with two children, Jon (Sue) Meyer, and Gena (Curtis) Hill. Both children live in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Bill has two grandchildren, Adam Meyer and Alana Hill.
Bill entered the United States Army on November 15, 1950. As a Sergeant First Class he served nine months on the front line in Korea as a machine gunner. He was honorably discharged on August 15, 1952. Following the service, Bill and Mary Ann moved south of Sac City and farmed for 35 years. Mary Ann died suddenly in 1989.
In 1996, Bill married Emma (Whalen) Babcock and moved to Odebolt, Iowa. Emma currently resides at the Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center. Bill has a stepson, Rick (Michelle) Babcock of Rochester, MN; four step-daughters, Becky (Pat) Reis of Odebolt, Cindy (Steve) Schramm of Auburn, LuAnn (Kirk) Marcum of Clarinda, and Marilyn Babcock of Ankeny; as well as many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Merle (Joan) Shannon of Sac City.
Bill enjoyed being with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, and taking bus tours. He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years.
In addition to his first wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evelyn Wheeler and Berthelene Davis; and a son-in-law, Curtis Hill.
